Personal Counseling Groups

The Counseling Center offers a variety of counseling, support, and educational groups each semester. Participants in groups benefit from the mutual support and learning that occurs from interaction with others who have similar concerns. ACT Group

Facilitators: Dr. John Taylor, Psy.D., Michael McPartland

This group is appropriate for clients with anxiety and/or depression. The purpose of this group is to teach clients how to reconnect to the present moment and make their live more about pursuing what is important to them.

A pre-group interview is required. Please call: (517) 355-8270.

Group meets on Wednesdays from 2:30pm - 4:00pm, begining January 22nd, 2014 in the MSU Counseling Center room 207.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA)

Facilitators: Bonnie Wheeler, M.A., L.P.C., L.M.S.W., Kathryn Davis

This is a support group for students who grew up with an alcoholic person in their life.

Group meets on Thursdays from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. MSU Counseling Center, 207 Student Services Building. 

African American Female Therapy Group

A non-traditional group approach incorporating essential elements of African American Culture. The group is offered to assist individual members with moving toward self-healing through collective sharing around multi-media stimuli.

Group meets on Mondays form 3:30- 5:30 pm starting January 27th, 2014. MSU Counseling Center, 13/13A Student Services Building.

Anxiety Group

Facilitators: Dr. Sung, Ph.D., Tenille Gaines, and Melissa Baker.

A process-oriented group focused on general anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, perfectionism, and mild OCD. Some mindfulness-based approaches will be included. Because this is not a skills-based group it is not well-suited for clients whose primary concern is test anxiety.

Group meets on Mondays from 3:00pm - 4:30pm starting on January 27th, 2014. This group will also meet on Thursdays from 12:30pm - 2:00pm inside the MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

Bipolar Disorder Support Group

Facilitators: Dr. Scott Brown, Ph.D., Tenille Gaines, and Michael McPartland.

A group for members of the MSU student community who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Targets for the group will include psycho-education, mood charting, strategies for hypomania, cognitive restructuring/skill acquisition, activity management, medication adherence and relapse prevention.

Breaking or Broken?: A Relationships Therapy Group

Facilitators: D. John Lee, Ph.D.

Are you having difficulties in your significant relationships (e.g. romantic break-up, family problems, etc.)? This group will help you understand yourself, your relationships, and the processes of forgiving and healing. We will also explore how to develop healthy patterns of relating to those individuals who mean the most to you (sorry this is not a couples group).

Drop-In and Be Well

Facilitators: Jen Grzegorek, Ph.D., Kelle Sajdak, M.A., Melissa Baker, M.A. and Kathleen Hucks

"Drop-in and Be Well" is a rotating, 4-session educational seminar series on the following four topics:

1) Healthy Relationships        

2) Stress Management

3) Healthy Sleep

4) Managing Thoughts and Feelings

Each session will be full of information and practical strategies to help you with your personal growth and mental health. Students may choose to attend any or all of the topics. Click on the flyer to the right to see the schedule for the four topics.

There is no need to register, and you don't need to be a Counseling Center client to attend. Simply come on by!

Seminars will be held weekly on Wednesdays from 1-2pm and Thursdays from 4-5pm. All seminars will be held in the Counseling Center, room 207 Student Services Building.

Eating Disorder Group - MSUCC

Facilitator: Donna Kitrick, L.M.S.W., Dr. Sung, Ph.D.

A group for members of the MSU student community who are experiencing difficulties with eating and/or body image. Topics will include recognizing cues that stimulate anxiety about body image or eating and learning new methods of responding to those various cues. Automatic thoughts and habituated behavior will also be examined and different ways of thinking and behaving will be explored.

Graduate Minority Women's Support Group

The focus of this group is to assist minority women in traversing the academic and social pressures involved with being a graduate student. Open to all graduate women with minority status (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion).

Graduate Student Therapy Group

Facilitators: Dr. John Lee, Ph.D and Timika Edwards

Being a graduate student can have unique challenges, both professionally and personally. This therapy group will utilize supportive dialogue and action methods to reduce stress, facilitate healing, and encourage growth.

Grief Recovery Group

Facilitators: Bonnie Wheeler M.A., L.P.C., L.M.S.W. and Benjamin Bigalke

This is a group for members of the MSU student community who are experiencing difficulties in handling the death of a loved one.

Group Goals:

  • (1) normalize the experience of bereavement using psycho-education about grief and experiential exercises,
  • (2) provide support for students who have experienced a recent death or loss in their life,
  • (3) provide a safe place for students to talk about their feelings regarding their recent loss.

Topics will include normal grief, dimensions of grief, fears related to loss, and coping strategies.

Women's Group

Facilitators: Mishelle Rodriguez and Kathleen Hucks

This group designed to be a safe place for women to share their experiences and discuss women's issues including perfectionism, low self-esteem, shame, and relationship issues. The goals include promoting wholeness and wellness by cultivating the courage to be emotionally honest, and developing healthy relationships and positive sense of self.

Sexual Assualt Groups

After the Silence

Facilitator: Lauren Allswede, L.M.S.W.

A group for female-identified survivors of sexual violence.

A pre-group screeing is required. Please call 517-355-8270 to schedule an appointment for your screening.

Group meets on Tuesdays from 3:00pm - 4:30pm, starting on January 14th, 2014. MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

Hope and Healing Group

Facilitators Leah Elliott, L.M.S.W.

This group will provide a safe space for female students who have experienced sexual violence to receive and provide support around the healing process.  This is a therapy group for women who have experienced sexual assault or sexaul abuse.

MENding Our Past

This psychotherapy group is for male students who had unwanted, abusive, or confusing sexual experiences at some point in their lives, which may still affect them. By providing a safe and confidential space where men can experience support and validation, we will empower men to build healthy coping strategies, move forward, and begin to see themselves as resilient and whole.
