Personal Counseling Groups

The Counseling Center offers a variety of counseling, support, and educational groups each semester. Participants in groups benefit from the mutual support and learning that occurs from interaction with others who have similar concerns. For more information about our groups, or to schedule your pre-group interview, please call 355-8270.

ACT Group

Facilitator: Dr. John Taylor

This group is appropriate for clients with anxiety and/or depression. The purpose of this group is to teach clients how to reconnect to the present moment and make their live more about pursuing what is important to them.

A pre-group interview is required. Please call: (517) 355-8270.

Group meets on Mondays from 3:00 - 4:30pm in the MSU Counseling Center room 207.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA)

Facilitator: Bonnie Wheeler, M.A., L.P.C., L.M.S.W.

This is a support group for students who grew up with an alcoholic person in their life.

A pre-group interview is required. Please call: (517) 355-8270.

African American Female Therapy Group

A non-traditional group approach incorporating essential elements of African American Culture. The group is offered to assist individual members with moving toward self-healing through collective sharing around multi-media stimuli.

Bipolar Disorder Support Group

Facilitator: Dr. Scott Brown

A group for members of the MSU student community who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Targets for the group will include psycho-education, mood charting, strategies for hypomania, cognitive restructuring/skill acquisition, activity management, medication adherence and relapse prevention.

Group meets on Thursdays from 2:00 - 3:30pm, and also on Fridays from 2:00 - 3:30pm  MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

Breaking or Broken?: A Relationships Therapy Group

Facilitator: Dr. John Lee

Are you having difficulties in your significant relationships (e.g. romantic break-up, family problems, etc.)? This group will help you understand yourself, your relationships, and the processes of forgiving and healing. We will also explore how to develop healthy patterns of relating to those individuals who mean the most to you (sorry this is not a couples group).

Drop-In and Be Well

Facilitators: Dr. Jen Grzegorek, James Brooks, MS, and Coleen Williams, MA

"Drop-in and Be Well" groups are geared toward providing students with support as well as useful information about common concerns that college students face. Four topics are presented in rotating order, and group sessions are offered four times per week, (see schedule to the right). You may attend as few or as many meeting as you wish. You don't need to be a client of the MSU Counseling Center to attend - all MSU students are eligible. Feel free to bring friends or roommates. There's no need to register - simply come to the Counseling Center, 207 Student Services Building, where you will be directed to the group room.

The following four topics are offered in rotation:

1) Healthy Relationships        

2) Anxiety and Stress Management

3) Sleep 101

4) Better Thoughts and Feelings

Groups are offered four times weekly: Mondays 12:30 - 1:30pm, Tuesdays 3 - 4pm, Wednesdays 1 - 2pm, and Thursdays 4 - 5pm.

All meetings are held in the MSU Counseling Center, room 207, Student Services Building.

Eating Disorder Group - MSUCC

Facilitators: Donna Kitrick, L.M.S.W., Dr. Duk-Hae Sung

A group for members of the MSU student community who are experiencing difficulties with eating and/or body image. Topics will include recognizing cues that stimulate anxiety about body image or eating and learning new methods of responding to those various cues. Automatic thoughts and habituated behavior will also be examined and different ways of thinking and behaving will be explored.

Epilepsy Group

Facilitated by: Dr. Tawa Sina

If you have been diagnosed with Epilepsy and you would like to join other talking about your experiences, gaining knowledge, enhancing personal growth, and having fun; please join us on Thursdays.

We will discuss topics like: Personal Stories, Relationships, Academic Success, Medical Resources, and more!

A pre-group screening is not required, however you must be diagnosed with Epilepsy or another seizure disorder in order to join this group. Please contact Dr. Sina at: TawaS@cc.msu.edu for more information.

Group meets Thursdays starting January 22 - February 26, 2015 from 2:00pm - 3:30pm, MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

General Therapy Group

Facilitator: Dr. Sung

For students with depression, anxiety, and/or relationship injuries. 

A pre-group screening is required. Please contact Dr. Sung at 517-355-8270 to schedule an appointment.

Group meets Wednesdays from 3:00pm - 4:30pm. MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

Graduate Minority Women's Support Group

The focus of this group is to assist minority women in traversing the academic and social pressures involved with being a graduate student. Open to all graduate women with minority status (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion).

Grief Recovery Group

Facilitator: Bonnie Wheeler M.A., L.P.C., L.M.S.W.

This is a group for members of the MSU student community who are experiencing difficulties in handling the death of a loved one.

Group Goals:

  • (1) normalize the experience of bereavement using psycho-education about grief and experiential exercises,
  • (2) provide support for students who have experienced a recent death or loss in their life,
  • (3) provide a safe place for students to talk about their feelings regarding their recent loss.

Topics will include normal grief, dimensions of grief, fears related to loss, and coping strategies.

Mindfulness - Based Meditation Workshop

Facilitator: Bob Eubanks, L.M.S.W.

An experiential workshop on mindfulness-based meditation and other techniques for anxiety/stress management and enhanced overall wel

lness. Must be interested in practicing meditation.

Our Space

This group is designed for students who wish to receive support around sexual orientation and gender identity.

Sexual Assualt Groups

After the Silence

A group for female-identified survivors of sexual violence.

A pre-group screeing is required. Please call 517-355-8270 to schedule an appointment for your screening.

Group meets on Wednesdays from 3:00pm - 4:00pm, starting on January 14th, 2015. MSU Counseling Center, 207, Student Services Building.

MENding Our Past

Facilitators: Lauren Allswede, L.M.S.W. and Dr. John Taylor.

This psychotherapy group is for male students who had unwanted, abusive, or confusing sexual experiences at some point in their lives, which may still affect them. By providing a safe and confidential space where men can experience support and validation, we will empower men to build healthy coping strategies, move forward, and begin to see themselves as resilient and whole. All enrolled male MSU students are eligible.
